Developing Instrument Scansĭeveloping a scan of the instruments when early into a flying career is very important to ensure no data or information is missed.

Cockpit Instrumentation FamiliarizationĬockpit rendering on the software is fantastic and providing the real aircraft that you fly matches the simulated aircraft the Sim can be a perfect training device for developing muscle memory of where to reach to access each instrument.Įven if the instrumentation is slightly different it is still a very useful tool and the nice amount of included cockpits, plus the additional ones you can download as Add-On’s make finding your aircraft a breeze (unless you are learning in some obscure aircraft!).

Using a simulator or ‘Sim’ is perfect for developing good memory of each step.Įngine Start, Pre-Flight, Landing, Engine Stop etc are great for practicing on a sim and ensuring good checklist habits. Missed items on a checklist can lead to the aircraft being configured into a dangerous setup and carefully following a checklist is paramount.

Used incorrectly it can really develop some bad habits that can be really costly to break! What PC Flight Simulators Are Great Forįlight simulators like X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Simulator are the worlds top home-based simulators and they are incredible trainers for the following areas: Aircraft ChecklistsĬhecklist familiarization when new to an aircraft is very important. Like any flight training tool, used correctly it can be very valuable.

Throughout my career, I have used many simulators from the PC-based desktop type through to $30M full motion, Level D aircraft simulators and I am a great believer in any simulator training, provided it used in the right way. However, PC simulators are unable to replicate the motion, feel, turbulence, and handling which can only be accomplished in a real aircraft. Even back in 2006, I was blown away at how realistic they were and how often they practiced on them – I was quite jealous of not having my own!Ī PC flight simulator can be a great training device for practicing procedures, checklists, emergencies, and pre-flying routes for students and novice pilots. One for helicopter and one for fixed-wing. Otherwise, it truly will be unflyable. When I first arrived at flight school both of my roommates had flight simulators for their computers. Lastly, make sure you move the controls through a FULL range of movement prior to flight to ensure it knows where max deflection is. Rudder pedals might do better with around 50% on the response curve. So, set the realism curves to full realism (no artificial stabiilty), and then play with the yaw, pitch and roll response curve, probably starting at around 20%, so that it's less sensitive about the center. With the control resistance bit out of the way, what remains is to make sure that your controls center properly, that you have the flight model set for full realism, and that you adjust the exponential response curves so that it's not stupidly sensitive to minute inputs. Just make sure you do NOT apply real world torque to the controls.you'll end up using way too much control input (think about how little you actually deflect the controls in the real airplane at cruise speed). However, once you realize that shortcoming, it should still be totally flyable. You'd need a force feedback system to make it truly feel like an airplane. One thing to know is that it's never going to feel exactly like the real airplane, not because of any shortcoming of the software but because you're using a plastic yoke that doesn't provide any dynamic feedback in terms of resistance. I use a stick, not a yoke, but the outcome should be about the same.
